Southlands Barn Wedding Photographer: Vix & Cal’s Scottish-Sprinkled Summer Wedding at Southlands Barn

(feat. first looks, Highland cows, vegan delights & a dancefloor that genuinely shook the building)

Weddings are always filled with their own kind of magic, but Vix & Cal’s August celebration at Southlands Barn brought a beautifully personal blend of joy, Scottish spirit, and laid-back summer charm. Overcast skies, huge smiles, and meaningful traditions wove through every moment, all shaped by Vix and Cal to be a day that felt completely, unapologetically them. As a Sussex wedding photographer, these are the kind of wedding days that make my heart do a little jig.

Morning Prep: Chaos, Camaraderie & the Cutest First Look

The day started at a brilliant Airbnb nearby, buzzing with excited friends, family, and the classic pre-wedding hunt for scissors.  But my favourite part? Vix and Cal chose to have a first look. Vix and Cal’s first look. It’s a huge trend in the US and still finding its feet over here, but I’m always thrilled when couples choose to do it. As a Southlands Barn wedding photographer, I always love when couples carve out a moment like this. Intentional, grounding, emotional. They exchanged private letters, enjoyed 15 peaceful minutes together, and honestly such a beautiful start to the most perfect day.

A Very Scottish Ceremony (Kilts, Tradition & Heart-Melting Moments)

The men looked phenomenal in full Scottish regalia; tartan, sporrans, the works. Cal looked so proud, and the heritage thread ran beautifully through the day.

One standout moment was the “Quiach ceremony” sharing their first drink from a two-handled cup, symbolising unity, friendship, and trust. A tradition that feels so meaningful you kind of wonder why every couple doesn’t do it.

The outdoor ceremony at Southlands Barn was simple, natural, and filled with emotion. Proof that even an overcast day can be wildly romantic.

Vegan Food That Could Convert Anyone

Now, let’s talk food.  Every single dish was vegan and genuinely some of the best vegan food I’ve ever tasted. As a Sussex wedding photographer I’ve tried a lot of menus, but Ren’s Kitchen honestly set a new bar.  Flavour-packed, beautifully presented, and completely crowd-pleasing even to the non vegan eaters.

And then… just when you think it can’t get any better!  THE DOUGHNUTS.  Not just any doughnuts. Vegan doughnuts delivered all the way from Berlin. Soft, rich, filled, glorious. A total wedding-day highlight.

Golden Hour… and the Highland Cow Supermodels!

Now there’s no disputing that Southlands Barn has it all, but one thing they have which is hands down one of it’s bonus features has to be their resident Highland cows!  Iona and Jura...the real celebrities of golden hour!  As a Southlands Barn wedding photographer, these two are always a bonus, and Vix and Cal’s portraits with them were pure Scottish countryside vibes.

Evening Fun: Glitter, Tunes & A Jumping Dancefloor

Their evening entertainment kicked off with guests transformed into shimmering disco beings thanks to Tasha Bailey, the glitter artist who left no cheekbone un-highlighted.  Then came the music.  A killer Spotify playlist curated by Vix and Cal themselves, proving once again that couples know exactly how to get their crowd moving.  Highlight of the night? The Scottish anthem “I Would Walk 500 Miles” blasting out right after their first dance. Cue mass stamping!  The barn ERUPTED! The dancefloor was literally bouncing. The kind of energy that, as a Sussex wedding photographer, keeps me grinning long after I’m home and editing.

A Perfectly Personal Day

Every detail of Vix & Cal’s wedding felt intentional, heartfelt, and joy-fuelled. Blending Scottish heritage, modern touches, vegan feasting, and pure party energy.  This Southlands Barn wedding was the perfect reflection of them. An absolute joy to capture from start to finish.

If you’re planning your own Southlands Barn wedding packed with personality, big emotions, and even bigger dancefloor energy, I’d love to be there to capture it all!  Get in touch with me here, and let’s chat about your wedding.
